Lunod Bathala

Description

While he may have been handsome once, Lunod is now, in a word, hideous. His face and torso were left horribly scarred during the attack on his island, and the healing process of his Exaltation left a network of jagged scars behind rather than making it whole again. Thanks to the tinsiana that carried his shard, his musculature is far more developed than his actual strength would indicate: after emerging from the Chrysails, Lunod had gained half of his weight again as muscle mass, his skin stretching in an attempt to hold everything in. Weaving in and out of the scars and stretch marks are tattoos of vitriol-stained moonsilver shaped into rolling waves, glistening with an acidic green glow under the proper light.

Despite his grotesque appearance, Lunod retains the gravitas that he had when he was merely mortal. He is able to charm and persuade with the grace of any Fiend, his voice strong and personality forceful. He wears robes befitting a priest but large enough to contain his bulk and keeps his appearance impeccable, his ruby red hair (another souvenir from the tinsiana) braided in the style common to the shamans of his people. He bears a trident that, thanks to the vitriol that tainted the black jade, has a slick oily feel to those who are not attuned to it.

Backstory

Once, there was an island in the West on the western edge of the Wavecrest Archapelago. On this island was a tribe that honored the Ocean Father above all others, even the Incarna. This tribe was led by a man who was a shaman skilled in both speech and prayer who gave great praise to the Ocean Father. As time went on, however, the man grew prideful, and began to say that the Ocean Father was the greatest of all gods, even more so than the Great Whale God that dwelled not too far from the island. And, as a servant of the Ocean Father, he was a greater man than any of the Whale God’s servants.

Words of this boast made their way under the waves, reaching the ears of the great whale himself. Angered by this mortal’s arrogance, Leviathan and a number of his children went to make an example of the man and his home. The clouds grew heavy over the island, leading many of the villagers to grow fearful. The priest was confidant that the Ocean Father would not let such a devout follower as he be harmed; of course, this would not be the case.

The whales encircled the island, allowing no vessels to leave. Then, Leviathan himself breached out of the water and flew much farther than any natural whale could go. He landed squarely on the village, slaying all within it. He then took a shape between man and whale and grabbed the shocked priest by the ankles, dragging him face-down around the coral beds that circled the island until there was nothing but torn meat left on his face and torso. The priest hurled curses through a broken mouth, spitting blood in the face of the Lunar. Ignoring his shouting, the Great Whale became an orca once more and left the now-ruined island, his children following behind.

The priest sat upon the shore, blood mingling with the rain and running down his ruined body as he watched the whales swim off with hatred in his eyes. As he sat, a ruby red scorpion scuttled towards him. The scorpion spoke of the downfall of the Great Whale God and the rise of the original creators of the world, and how the priest could stand at the front of this charge. Angered at his perceived abandonment by his god, the priest accepted, and had only a moment to gasp as the scorpion enveloped his body and encased him in a rock-hard carapace of ruby and blood.

Five days and nights passed, the bodies of the villagers granted no burial due to having no one left to dispose of their remains. On the fifth night, the ruby chrysalis cracked then exploded open as the new Exalt emerged. He howled his defiance to the gods of Creation, slaying the hungry ghosts of his people before giving them a proper burial. He gloried in the power granted to him by the Yozi, experimenting and testing his new body.

A Lintha ship passed by some days later and came ashore upon seeing the wreckage. The priest killed a number of the pirates before their captain recognized the touch of the Yozi upon the man. When asked, the priest introduced himself as Lunod Bathala, Servant of the Endless Desert. The Lintha brought the Infernal to Malfeas not long after, teaching him of the Yozi and what he would need to know as a Green Sun Prince.

Lunod has been Exalted for three years now, working as closely with the Lintha as one can while not being part of the family to aid their expansion in the West. His ultimate goal, however, lies deep below the surface of the Western ocean, in a city long forgotten by almost all of Creation. There, he shall find the weapon he needs to strike the final blow against the Great Whale and gain revenge for his tarnished pride…and for his village, of course.
